About Montgomery County, PA
Montgomery County came into existence in 1793 by resolution of a constitutional convention, when the state legislature set aside land from Washington County. The county was named in memory of Major Lemuel P. Montgomery, a revolutionary leader who was mortally injured and died at the siege of Quebec. It is bounded northwest by Fredrick County, Northeast by Patuxent River, south by Potomac River and Columbia District. A state of honor of Major Montgomery graces the entrance as you enter the county.
The county is composed of the legislative and executive branches. The Executive branch enforces and implements the County laws and provides operational guidance to the government. The judicial system handles the resolution of all matters touching on civil and criminal law within the county. The Circuit Court for Montgomery is the trial court of general jurisdiction and has full common law equity powers in civil and penal cases.
